Limiting the Content Types a Folder Can Contain

This How-to applies to: 2.5

In certain scenarios you may wish to restrict the type of content that can be added to a folder. Learn how to change those settings in this how-to.

In certain scenarios you may wish to restrict the type of content that can be added to a folder.  You may choose to do this to enforce your own organizational strategy, or when you have users that have limited publishing rights, and you want to keep your content organized.  For instance consider a folder called 'local events' which uses a folder view in order to display content.  In this case you don't want users adding items that are not events to this folder.

  1. Navigate to the folder you wish to restrict the content in.
  2. Under Add to Folder select Restrict.  Change the Mode to Select Manually.
  3. Under Addable Types click to select items that you want to allow in your folder.  Hold down the control button and click to add or subtract several items. The default is to allow all standard content types.
  4. The next list, Preferred Types, does not restrict the type of items that can be added to the folder, but instead modifies the add item menu.  Only those items selected in Addable Types will be available in the initial pull down menu.  The rest of the items can be accessed via the 'more' selection from the same menu.  This will take you to a new page where all enabled types will be available for selection.
  5. If you need to undo the changes you've made to a folder, simply select the Use Site Defualt mode and push Save.
